Carl Gifford is the charismatic personality behind Carlucci
Land. His passion for the environment is matched by his
passion for the creative and he has become a household
name to Wellington locals.
Carl has been in business for over 25 years, progressing
from a successful career as a mechanic, to the artist and
campaigner he is known as today. His creative path began
when he turned his hand to masonry
beautifully formed stone walls using locally sourced
materials. It wasn’t long before Carl began to look at his
medium from a unique perspective, truly understand
the physical attributes of the rocks he was working with
and how to apply their raw value to works of art.
His enthusiastic delivery has captured the imaginat
hundreds of thousands of visitors to Carlucci Land, from
the inception of his great vision, where a few of his
sculptures guarded the entry to Owhiro Bay from Happy
Valley Road, to the grand Sculpture Park Carlucci Land is
today.
His dedicated team includes his partner, Catherine
Mulholland who manages the administration and finance
of Carlucci Land, allowing Carl the opportunity to further
explore his creative. Catherine also works alongside Carl
in their efforts to educate the community about the
natural world during tours through the park.
Throughout the development of both his business and his
art, Carl has been a tireless campaigner for the
preservation of the Southern Wellington Coast.

election of the Wellington City Council.
Carl’s efforts to champion environmental preservation
were recognized in 2005 when he was presented with the
Wellington Civic Trust Award for his contribution to the
‘Enhancement of Wellington’. He contin
